I am not sure I can get a response to my question on this issue but here
goes. I am using a Google nexus 3 with the latest Android update (Jellybean
4.XX?) Anyway, I am a little POed that I am unable to increase the volume
on my rings and my conversations. I am POed that I can't 'LOCK' my sound
levels. Every time I grip my phone and accidentally depress the button my
sound level drops and I already have a hard time hearing it at 'full'.

I am especially POed because I know damn well the phone itself is perfectly
capable of projecting louder noise. I know this because when I play words
with friends and a commercial is triggered the sound is suddenly loud
enough for me to hear easily..

Is there an app I can use to 'fix' these issues?

Thank you,

Herb

I received this more-or-less anonymous contact that was very
non-specific.
I responded back with pleasantries but it occurred to me that maybe
this
was something else, like a fishing expedition. ...more<http://groups.google.com/group/android-discuss/msg/b3cd5f56f8adabd2>

This is a developer group. We talk about issues relating to developing
and publishing applications. The Play store has a search feature you
could use to see if there are any apps to do that, but I somewhat doubt
it. It would be better to find an Android consumer group to ask this
question of.

That said, it seems like an unfortunate truism that most smartphone
manufacturers end up with insufficient maximum volume, both on rings and
on audio, especially the external speaker audio. And I don't think
there's anything that can be done about it. I have a Galaxy Nexus, and I
find its maximum volumes are too quiet as well.

The reason the commercials are louder is likely that they're digitally
range compressed and adjusted to raise their perceived volume; the
sounds in the commercial are squeezed to be as loud as the speaker can
produce. The actual "volume" setting isn't being changed; the nature of
the sound being played back is.

I don't think there's a code path that would allow a developer to
digitally range compress a phone conversation, but it's possible, so it
wouldn't hurt to see if there's an app that can do it. Keep in mind that
such an app could also send your voice conversations to any arbitrary
third party (i.e., listen in on your calls), so be sure you trust them.
